Harvest Monday – Cherry Season

So, it’s been a minute (decade?) since I’ve written a Harvest Monday post, but there’s no reason to not jump back in again, is there?

This year looks a little different in the growing department with the majority of our food production being limited to our Kitchen Garden. This is giving me more time to be present with the plants instead of rushing past them in a flurry while battling my way through the weeds.

The raspberries and blackberries are progressing beautifully and there will be great abundance there barring any catastrophic occurrence. However, the orchard will be low producing this year due to a heavy 2024 season and some late Spring wonky weather.

Alas, for the first time in a long time, I feel inspired to intentionally track our harvests again. Not by the ounce like a decade ago, but simply with what comes in the door and goes onto our table or into our cups.

We’ve come a long way from our 1/8 acre urban homestead to the 10 acre property we care take but the root of the work we do is to have a closer relation with the food we eat. And so it is.

Weekly Harvest, In Review

  • Spinach
  • Kale
  • Carrot thinnings
  • Shelling peas
  • Aspargus
  • White strawberries (just a few)
  • Strawberries
  • Sweet cherries
  • Chives
  • Lemon Balm
  • Mint
  • Rosemary
  • Thyme
  • Wild rose petals
  • Eggs

With 90+* temps upon us, it’s time to flip the spinach bed and put some bush beans in, so that’s on the to-do list this week. We’ll also be harvesting the sour cherries which go from not-quite-ready to so-very-ready in short order in this heat.

What have you recently harvested and are enjoying this growing season?

Onward,

Melissa

Linking up with Dave at Happy Acres for this weeks Harvest Monday. Pop over to see what he and other’s are pulling in from their patches.

I harvested my first strawberry yesterday. I have been harvesting herbs for over a month. My girls are laying well. Our house is on the market, so I didn’t do any annual veggies this year, which makes me sad.

Sounds like some wonderful abundance in your neck of the woods! I sure hope your house sells quickly and find a beautiful new place to put down some roots! Will you get to keep your chickens?

Good to see you back on Harvest Monday! And good to hear an update on your farm. Our cherries were a bust this year, but it we have raspberries, blueberries and blackberries that are doing well.

Hi Dave! Thank you for hosting! I’m so glad to hear you have some solid fruit doing well this year! Last year was a banner year in the fruit dept here so while we’ll miss a few treats this year, we’re happy to let it rest. Hope you have a wonderful week ahead!
