It’s hard to believe we’re back in this liminal space again already…
Sitting on the threshold of a new year…
While reflecting on so.many.happenings of this year.
And yet, here we are.
Working on and with the land is always full of lessons and unexpected experiences and 2024 was no exception.
We enjoyed a warm spring, a wildly abundant fruit year, and many harvests that surpassed all previous harvests across multiple crops…
We also faced multiple rattlesnake encounters on the busiest parts of our property and lost our beloved barn cat, Corazon, to one of their vicious bites…
We witnessed the northern lights right here in Northern New Mexico for the first time thanks to our wide open skies and gloriously clear nights…
There are still cider apples in the walk in waiting for pressing and the does are following their natural rhythms in the hopes of becoming mamas next spring (though no one is bred yet)…
And we’ve added a new LGD to our farm and family in recognition that our Great Pyrenees, Akuna, is almost 10 years old and our Spanish Mastiff male has just turned five.
Rue (seen in the featured image of this post) is a spritely Spanish Mastiff female who we hope will learn the ropes from Akuna before she gets too old to chase off the mountain lions and call off the coyotes.
Rue came to us at 10 weeks old and weighing in at 30 pounds! I have no doubt at all that she will be a fierce protector.
I won’t pretend to know what 2025 has in store for us. Between the ever increasing climate crisis, the proposals and promises incoming administration, and the general humility of working alongside the land to grow food in the high desert, it seems the possibilities are endless.
Luckily, the pendulum swings both ways and while standing on this threshold in this moment, with time stretched out before us, the possibilities feel rather hopeful.
Time will tell, but we’re here for it…
For the community and the food and the land and the critters.
Thanks for being here with us.
Wishing you an abundant 2025!
xoxo,
M
Cute, if big, puppy. I’m sure Rue will learn to be a good protector of the farm. The future does seem a bit scary right now, but we can be optimistic. Wishing you the best for 2025 🙂
Happy 2025, Trent! Wishing you all the joy and peace your heart can hold this year!
