Goat Pregnancy Watch! Day 111

As you might recall, on Day 86 I wrote about our wonderings as to whether or not Mama was actually pregnant and finally deciding that yes, in fact, she must have at least two kids in there!

Well, now that we’re about a month out from her estimated/official Kidding Day (May 7th at 145 days), she’s really starting to pop!

Now, there are a couple of things to note here:

  • Twins and triplets are very common for Nigerian Dwarf Goats
  • This is Mama Mello’s second pregnancy.  Her first delivery gave a set of triplets…so that’s a possibility here
  • Mama is herself, one of five born to her own poor mama (quintuplets!)…so that’s also a possibility here.  EEK!!!

Multiples? Yeah…I’m totally cool with multiples!

But four or five seems a bit much, don’t you think?

Which is why, when one of my regular readers on Facebook saw the below photo and declared “four” (quadruplets!!!) and warned us to stock up on goat milk, bottles, and nipples, I started getting a little nervous.

I guess, though, that as long as they all come out OK (literally) and are born healthy, everything else will fall into place, right?  Especially since Mama has already proven herself to be a great mama!

And so, in the interim, there is a kidding area to establish so she can safely birth and bond with her sweet babies when the time comes…

And a First Aid kit to add to…

And her poor, stretching belly to rub as often as possible.

Yes, my skittish Mama, the girl who wouldn’t be touched when we first brought her home less than a year ago, has become my new best friend, even pushing Lucy and Ethel out of the way to get some love and good scratches.

Honestly, I’ll take it happily.

Trust is such a lovely thing…

Especially the kind of trust that leans into you, begging for more 🙂

Stay tuned, Friends. This is getting better and better with every.single.day!

xoxo,
M

    1. Thank you! My fingers are crossed for an easy delivery! She knows what to do, as long as those babies all line up and slide right out 😉
