Reuniting Kids w/ Nature – Recycled Eggshells

MATERIALS:

Empty egg shells, a paper bag (like the ones used for sack lunches), a cookie sheet, garden gloves

TIME FRAME:

Minutes each day + 30 minutes process time

PROCEDURE:

  1. With permission, begin saving your families egg shells after meals. Maybe you can establish a bag for them under the kitchen sink or in the garage?
  2. Continue to collect shells until your bag is about half full.
  3. With help, preheat your oven to 250 degrees and carefully dump your shells out onto a cookie sheet.
  4. Put your shells in the oven for 5-10 minutes to ensure they are completely dry
  5. Carefully remove your eggshells from the oven and allow to cool for 10-15 minutes
  6. Once cool, place them back into the paper bag and put your garden gloves on.
  7. Take your bags of eggshells outside, roll up the bag and carefully begin crushing the shells. Be careful, those shells are sharp and will poke you! Make sure to wear gloves and be aware!
  8. Once your shells are smashed up as small as you can get them, place them in a plastic sandwich bag and put them with your gardening materials to use when it’s planting time!

CONNECTIONS:

There are many ways to recycle! Recycling eggshells to use in the garden not only limits waste but also helps many plants! Tomatoes and peppers especially love the calcium found in eggshells which helps them grow up healthy and produce more fruit!

IMAGININGS:

Imagine if every single person recycled just one or two things all the time? What might happen to our landfills? Now imagine if every person recycled five or 10 things all the time? What might happen to not only our landfills but to all of the waste it takes to create any given item from scratch? How might the limited waste be good for our environment?
