Meyer Lemon Tree

Meyer Lemon Tree

Well, we finally broke down and purchased ourselves a little lemon tree!  We’ve been talking about it for a while and have debated the pros and cons and have decided to go ahead and jump on it.

It’s really little right now…more of a bush than a tree…but it has itty bitty lemons on it and that makes me happy!

It will have to live in a pot for its entire life (I don’t ever foresee us moving somewhere that doesn’t go below 20 degrees) and it will have to live in the dining room during the cold months as long as we live in this house, but we hope to one day have a home with better solar gain and maybe even a greenhouse/hothouse that it will be very happy in 🙂  Since it’s so little right now, I think we have a couple of years to figure that out, though!

Do you have citrus trees? Do you have to bring them in during the cold months or does your climate allow for their proper growth?

xoxo,
M

  1. Congrats! That’s a lovely little tree. My dad has one, and every year he says he’s going to get rid of it, because it doesn’t make lemons, and every year he keeps it anyway. And this year he finally got lemons! Patience is key, it seems!

    1. Ha! I’m glad he kept his tree! How many years did it take to finally get *real* lemons?

  2. I have a Eureka lemon in our front garden but I have a dwarf meyer lemon too. Mine does live outside but it still lives in a pot due to a lack of space. My first lemons are almost ripe so I’m very excited.

    1. Oh my! I can only imagine how delicious your home grown lemons will be! What will you do with them???

  3. Do you know that’s one tree we don’t have yet! I’m curious what your debate was? Was it just the fact it would have to be inside more often than not? I just didn’t know if there was some other issue I need to know about before pulling the trigger on a purchase, ha. Congrats, can’t wait to see it’s progress!

    1. Nope, no other issue than “is it really feasible” and “how fats might it actually grow?”

Now that we have it, I’m just excited to see its progress 🙂 I hope you’ll take the plunge, too…the flowers smell so incredibly wonderful…it might be worth the cost just for the smell of the flowers!!! 😉

  4. Excellent! I think a lemon tree is an indispensable element in any culinary garden, and the Meyer lemon trees make lovely container plants 🙂

    1. Agreed! It seems so foreign to have a fruit tree that will have to live inside…but it’s also quite amazing :-!

  5. We potted an Improved Meyer Lemon Tree for our dining room earlier this year, and then my best friend followed suit. The whole house smells wonderful! We also don’t live in a climate where a lemon tree can survive but this is a fun alternative no?

    1. Yes! Very exciting! Who knows how long it’ll rake to get a *real* lemon, but oh…the flowers smell absolutely divine!
