The Door Swings Out!

A couple of days ago, when I wrote about all the work Tool Lady did on the chicken coop, I completely forgot to mention the most exciting upgrade to the whole darn coop!

Ever since we built the Chicken Mansion, my biggest frustration has been having to push and shove my way into the coop every time I had to get inside to feed and water the Ladies.  Literally pushing and shoving through the straw bedding that lines the floor of the coop since the door to the coop that swung in.

Now, though…Now, it swings out!

So, the straw can build up inside the door and when I open it, there is no pushing or shoving to do! Who knew that flipping the hinges on a coop door could bring this city girl so much joy?!  I’m telling you, it’s the little things that really add up!

Another little thing that adds to the ease of getting in and out of the coop?  Locks on both sides.  That way, we can be in the coop and not worry about the Ladies escaping.  Good stuff, I tell you.  Good stuff.

What tricks have you learned about chicken coops or keeping chickens that make your life and your chores easier?  Please share your knowledge in the comments below!

  1. That’s funny. Every dumb chicken book ever written always says have the door swing IN, so the chickens don’t get out. I have it both ways, once is out, which I prefer, and one is in, because it’s the only way it could go. I don’t like the in one, I’m with you on that.

The one thing I learned is to keep everything off the floor. Not everything is suspended, but it’s on a base of some sort. Those girls are messy!

    1. I really have never gotten over how messy the Ladies are! They’re happy to kick everything everywhere all the time, aren’t they!?
