I’m Melissa, the voice and photographer behind this account 👩🏻‍🌾 What started off ~15 years ago as a few tomatoes in pots became an urban farm with a few chickens on 1/8 acre in the city of Santa Fe and has evolved into a phenomenal caretaking gig on 10 acres in the high desert of northern NM where we’ve been since the spring of 2018. The property boasts an heirloom orchard and hundreds of linear feet of blackberries and raspberries. In addition, we are allowed to grow whatever crops and keep whatever animals our hearts desire. My wife and I (+ our young daughter) care for our menagerie of critters (lots of poultry, goats, and pigs + LGDs and a barn cat), practice soil management, grow as much food as we can, and do our best to tread lightly on the land beneath our feet. Farm life is never perfect and we make our share of mistakes as we learn as we go but we love this life we’re living and we’re so very grateful for the adventure. Solid day spent filling the freezer. Our flock is Solid day spent filling the freezer. Our flock is a bit smaller (and calmer), our pups are super happy, and we are wiped but happy, too. We do our best to give our critters a wonderful life and one bad minute and I continue to hope it’s harder on us than it is on them. Culling day is never easy and even after all these years I still believe it never should be. Sitting in exhaustion and gratitude for this little life of ours ❤️
Fantastic first cider pressing today! We made it t Fantastic first cider pressing today! We made it through about 1/3 of this year’s total harvest and feeling so very grateful for such an abundant year ❤️🍎❤️ 45 boxes transformed in 18 gallons. Holy WoW. One major difference between past mid-October pressings and this one? It was 84* today, requiring sunscreen and copious amounts of icy hydration compared to the multiple layers and fresh cider immediately warmed on the stove in the past. Wild.

Surely it can’t just be me 🤔 As we speak I’m freezing more basil and olive oil (details below ⬇️), mulling over dates for cider pressing, and irrigating the garden for its final push while feeling immensely grateful for our orchard clean up crew. I might also be counting down the days until the snow flies! Well, kinda. We do have a billion more things to do before that can happen so…😅 Moving on ⬇️ How to Preserve Fresh Herbs in Oil? Using one herb at a time or a combo of your favorites: ➡️ Roughly chop up your herb(s) of choice ➡️ Fill your ice cube trays with chopped herbs, pressing them in gently to fill the space without packed it tightly ➡️ Pour olive oil over the top, ensuring all the herbs are fully covered/saturated ➡️ Place tray(s) in the freezer for ~24 hours ➡️ Remove frozen cubes from tray(s) ➡️ Place cubes in freezer bags or mason jars ➡️ Label with herbs used and date and put back in the freezer ❄️ You can also mix up various chopped, fresh herbs to create blends like an Italian mix or one for poultry ❤️

Summer so far: Early abundance, future hope, and e Summer so far: Early abundance, future hope, and escape pigs, among other things. We watch the skies and hope for rain while we pull endless weeds and do our best to stay hydrated. We also hold our NM neighbors dealing with fires and floods in our hearts. It’s all a balance, an experiment, but climate chaos sure does make me wonder what the future of our food might look like. In the meantime, I’m grateful for where we are and what we’re up to 💚 I hope the same for you 🥰

The sudden abundance of (gorgeous) eggs *almost makes up for the intolerable wind and whiplash weather we’re experiencing here 🍃 How are things in your neck of the woods?
