Homesteading

Come What May

Or at least what’s left of it, no? Alas, the garden is in, the farm is popping, the chicks are growing and all.the.ducks are setting their clutches (as they do).

It’s been a whirlwind of a couple of months here, both farm related and non-farm related. I’d wager a guess, though, that no one wants to read all the nitty gritty details so I’ll just share a few and some photos for a simple “I’m baaaaack!” post today 🙂

Cool? Cool.

Apple Pressing

The wildest experience of the Spring just might have been the Apple Pressing party we hosted a couple of weeks ago.

Yes, you read that right.

Along with our Landlord, we decided to see how long the cider storage apples could truly store and still make some tasty cider. We did not put on our scientist coats and track the numbers like maybe we could have but we had an awesome day filled with solid friends/workers!

And for our effort? 70 boxes of apples gave us 36 half gallons of tasty liquid gold.

Some was given to our helpers and the rest was split between us and our Landlords. Ours went into the freezer and some of theirs is being turned into hard cider.

The leftover apple bits went to the critters and the compost.

All in all we’re considering it a worthwhile experiment though we probably won’t wait as long in the future.

Beyond Pressing

Outside of carrying one season fully into another, crossing all the seasonal boundaries we could have imagined (maybe) have been all the normal prepping tasks for the high growing season ahead. Highlights include:

  • Top dressing the kitchen garden with our goat powered (and perfectly cured) compost.
  • Putting in a wide variety of crops, including most of the nutrient dense newbies I was thinking about in February.
  • Harvesting wild rose petals for future tea blends.
  • Watching the peas hold on for dear life against the wicked spring winds.
  • Appreciating the pigs appreciation of their foraging spaces.
  • Finding gratitude in our moody skies and occasional rain showers (we’ll take every drop we can get).

There’s more I could share, but for now I’ll stop here.

What’ve you been up to? I’d love to hear about any adventurings/seed plantings/general life happenings you’d like to share 🙂

I hope Spring has treated you well and the slide into Summer (can you believe June is *next week*?!) is a smooth one.

Onward,

Melissa
