Next Saturday is technically Acequia Clean Up Day, but with help at hand today (brother and daughter), we decided to clean out our portion of the acequia this weekend rather than waiting.
There were leaves to be raked and moved to the garden and mole hill remnants to be shoveled out…
There was trash to collect and glass to carefully pick up that had washed down the line from those who care less about their water systems…
There was grass to weed whack back, baby elms and cottonwoods to cut back, and roots to cut out.
We worked hard for hours before breaking for a late lunch (Kim made this and it was amazing), sharing a few beers, and taking a couple of pictures.
Sore, exhausted, an itty bitty bit sunburned, and so very grateful for the help, I couldn’t be happier have this project done.
Now we wait for the water to make it’s way from the Chama…
For the glorious sounds of running water on the property…
The ability to get my hands in the soil, sow some seeds, and grow some good food again.
xoxo,
M
I too am unfamiliar with Acequia, googled to learn but am looking forward to your post to learn more. Hope you are able to get some well deserved rest.

Thank you very much, Norma! Rest is on the way later this week and an Acequia post is on my mind 🙂 I’m excited by everyone’s curiosity!
Wow! Like everyone else, I had no idea about this as a “thing” ! It sounds like a great idea. No wonder you want to keep it clean if it’s water for your farm 🙂
Waiting for the post about how it all works Etc!
Yes, such an important thing 😊 Stay tuned, I’ll pull something together soon!
Please explain to us northerners(nebraska) what a ace quiz is.
I live in a small town in the country but have never heard of this.
Ah yes! An acequia is an irrigation ditch that comes off a main river and provides water to rural farm areas and communities that have been given “water rights” to be able to water their crops and fields. I think I’ll pull together a whole post on it so stay tuned!
You deserve a nice break after such a hard time at work. I am unfamiliar with this bit but I can imagine the amount of work! I hope the water flows through soon and you get to sow some beautiful seeds and reap the benefits 🙂

Wow…I did not post Five Engaging Stories…Haha…Don’t know where that came from 😀 But I do have some interesting posts up on my blog…Inspired by your regular section of ‘If we Were having coffee’ I stared a section called ‘If we were Strolling together’ where I write about random thoughts that pop up in my mind while I stroll by the beautiful green lawns…I hope you enjoy it.
Oh boy…the Comment Luv plug in must be experiencing technical difficulties! I like the idea of “strolling together”…I’m off to check it out 🙂
Thank you! It’s always worth the work, though yes, incredibly exhausting! I feel like I’ve been hit by a train!
Acequia management is unknown territory for me. When does the water start running, and who decides? With best wishes for the recovery of sore muscles, Judith
Hi Judith! There is a Mayordomo who is responsible for managing the acequia for our village. He works with the Association (of the village) to determine when it goes on based on weather and the flow of the main river that our acequia system comes off of. Last year it was turned on on April 1st, so we’re guessing it’ll be right around then 🙂
Really? Wow! I think you need to write a whole post on this for those of us who are totally ignorant of these things!
