We harvested the last of the summer veggies today before tearing up the garden in preparation for sowing some cover crops, spreading some compost, manure, and mulch and officially calling it all “done” for the year.
We harvested a few tomatoes (both ripe and green), a bouquet of basil (that will become pesto), and more carrots than we’ve ever harvested before…
Hence, the Photo Shoot π
I didn’t weigh any of it (the flurry of the day’s activities simply didn’t allow for it) but the baby carrots have been split between some green chile stew and the fridge (to be added to a future roast as well as for the week’s snacks) while the larger carrots will be stored in a bucket in sand in the garage until they’re all gone.
I don’t know that I’ve ever been so excited about a bunch of carrots before but man am I stoked about these babies!
The funny thing is, these were planted as an afterthought, sown around the base of each tomato plant in the middle of summer and then completely ignored. Β There was no thinning (hence, so many baby carrots!), and they weren’t watered as often as they should have been towards the end of the summer…and yet, they are so sweet and so crisp, and just absolutely gorgeous.
Small victories, right?
xoxo,
M
Your interplanted carrots did amazing. Such a pretty bonus crop. They must have made a nice living mulch for the tomato plants.

They really are wonderful companion plants! Our potatoes and corn did well together this year as well! π
Lovely colorful carrots! I just love it when the garden gives a nice bonus like that. Too often our earnest efforts turn into disappointments, like my planting of spinach that completely disappeared while I was away on vacation – dang bugs.

It’s nice when things are easy, isn’t it…especially because they’re often not. They were a nice surprise, indeed!
Those are some beautiful carrots! And I love your growing strategy. Most of the things I neglect don’t turn out nearly as well as your carrots did. π

If only it were so easy all of the time, ha? π
these look awesome… I’ve never seen so many colors of carrots before π do the red ones taste differentl from the (traditional) orange ones?

You know, some people say they can taste the difference, but I can’t! I just love how beautiful they are in their rainbow of colors in salads and roasts π never hurts to have a little fun with your food!
