With the month almost half way gone (already!), the September Slide into fall has officially begun.

Between the chilly nights and still hot days…

The the late planted sunflowers in full bloom and the garden in decline…

The chickens putting themselves to bed well before dark and the woolly caterpillars trying to find a safe spot to rest…

I’m now finding incredible comfort in sweatshirts and hot tea and making mental lists of all the things that need to be done to get the animals, the land, and ourselves ready for coldest months ahead.

This winter is shaping up to be an interesting one with reports of a super intense El Nino pattern coupled with our inexperience in this area which is creating an anxiety in me that I don’t remember feeling before.

But there are months to go (?!) before the first snow flies (if we’re lucky)…

So first, first…

There is ice cream to enjoy while it’s sill enjoyable…

The acequia to listen to while it is still running…

The smell of roasting of tomatoes to fill the house…

About a bazillion grapes to turn into jelly and jam (along with those still left on the vine which make the most divine night chilled breakfast ever)…

Pumpkins to cure before becoming November’s pie

And green chile to purchase, peel, chop, and pressure can to keep us warm from the inside all winter long.

Fall really is my favorite (even when I’m not quite ready to surrender summer to it).

xoxo,
M
