The garden in late July of years past has been a bit of a beast. We tend to find ourselves at the tail end or smack dab in the middle of our monsoon season and, truly, there’s no better magic than water that falls from the sky in the form of actual rain when it comes to how a garden grows.

This year, though, despite a good monsoon season, it seems as though the garden is a bit behind those of the past couple of years. Given our late spring and super dry June coupled with my own distractions and busy-ness and time being spent with our sweet Sprout, there were some late plantings, some germination failures and some “vacant” space that has remained so despite it being so late in our high growing season.

So, while I hoped today might be the day I could get out into the garden and begin sowing our fall crops, it was simply not meant to be!

Maybe tomorrow will be it.

Maybe the day after.

Soon though, very soon 😉

Now, this is not to say there isn’t anything coming in from the garden, it’s just not the bounty I had hoped for this year. There’s been a few bush beans (about a pound), some radishes (just a few ounces) and all of our tiny, curing/not-yet-weighed garlic.

There’s also a ton of herbs waiting patiently for me to bring them inside to dry.

Soon.

Now though, right now, there’s an army-crawling Sprout to chase!

xoxo,
M

  1. it seems like there are just summers that don’t work out as well. Last year, between me pregnant and on bed rest for half of it and then breastfeeding a newborn every hour for the other half of it, our gardens were disastrous… but for those years, that is what the farmer’s market is for and you can only try and do better the next year! I think your garden looks wonderful. 🙂

    1. I completely agree about the Farmer’s Market being the answer to a rough garden year! Not quite sure what I’d do without ours this summer 🙂

  2. My winter squash hasn’t started to set fruit yet. I did see the first blooms though which is good. They are always male, but maybe in a couple of weeks I’ll see some female blooms. I love your photo with the butterfly. I was chasing a black swallowtail yesterday, but just couldn’t get close enough to photograph it.
