With Spring officially upon us, it only makes sense that it would be time to begin the seed starting process!
I have felt very behind in the seed starting area this spring, though really, I’m not behind where most people are, just behind my own idea of how far ahead I would like to get in the seed starting process just in case we actually do have the warm, wet spring the Farmer’s Almanac has talked about (and I am so hoping for)!
I’m still using my toilet paper roll seed starting pods (though sometimes I shove a bit of straw in the bottom instead of using newspaper strips) and recycled yogurt containers for the majority of our seed starting and, while it takes a bit more effort than purchasing blocks from the nursery each season, I do, for the most part, enjoy the process 🙂
So, here’s the list of seeds pushed into soil and placed beneath grow lights, to date:
Tomatoes
- Brandywine
- Yellow Taxi
- Barnes Mountain Yellow
- Black From Tula
- Italian heirloom
- Indigo Rose
- Orange Flesh Purple Smudge
- Martino’s Roma
- Crnkovic Yugoslavian*
Cherry Tomatoes
- Blondkopfchen*
- Large Red*
Peppers
- Jalapeno
- Shishito
- Ring of Fire Cayenne
- Aurora*
Tomatillos
- Green
- Pineapple*
Eggplant
- Florida High Bush
- Listada de Gandia*
Misc.
- Broccoli
- Brussels Sprouts*
- Cabbage
- Okra*
- Luffa
- Marigolds
- Nasturtiums
The items above with the asterisk ( * ) are items or varieties that I have never grown grown before, which is super exciting and a little stressful because I want everything to be successful, especially the new items! 😉
What hasn’t been started yet? Any of my herbs. Really. They will go in as soon as I can carve out a few extra minutes to play some Tetris with my grow light stand and pull out the soil again. What’s on the list? Basil, parsley, oregano, calendula and chinese pink, to start. Stay tuned.
How is your seed starting going? Do you have a schedule of when you like to begin your annual seed starting or do you just wing it?
xoxo,

Hi!
I am new to the blog, but I live in southwest michigan and I have started my seeds. This is my first year with a garden so I am learning how early to start. I started the following seeds; onions around 3/11, peppers and basil and tomatoes 3/23, and broccoli 4/4.
All the best!
Thanks for being here! It always makes me happy to hear of other starting their own seeds! It’s such an easy thing to do and makes such a difference in cost and in quality! Happy growing!
I love trying new things too. Though sometimes I buy the new things and then don’t find a space for them in the garden. This year I’m trying celeriac which I’ve never done before.
