MATERIALS:
Weather appropriate clothing. A magnifying glass, your nature journal or a camera (all optional)
TIME FRAME:
15 – 60 minutes
PROCEDURE:
- While outside, find an insect and follow it on its path. Where is it going? Where did it come from? Is it alone or followed by friends? Is it carrying anything?
- Do your best to not disturb the insect…just observe for as long as you’d like to. You can even bring your nature journal with you and make a map of its path!
REFLECTION:
What insect did you follow? How long did you follow it? Where did it take you? Did you document its journey in any way? What else might you be able to follow? Do you think that different insects might take you on different journeys?
TIDBITS:
Did you know that even though we have been studying ants for years, no one knows for sure how fast they travel or how far they can travel in a given day? Why do you think that is? How might we be able to learn more about ants and their abilities?
IMAGININGS:
Imagine that you are an ant…what would you spend your life doing? Digging, foraging, building, searching, helping your friends and family? How might that feel? How is an ants life different than yours? How is it similar?
