Our herb garden is in a sad state right now. I’m not sure if our seeds are old or if the drought has just played a doozy on our efforts (despite the drip irrigation we have installed), but our little herb bed is missing it’s oregano, basil and thyme, despite a couple of sowings.
So, after much debate, we finally decided to move forward with purchasing some starts from a big box store and transplanting them into the little slots. Luckily, it’s pretty late in the season so everything was on super sale! These herbs will, however, be the only things in our garden this year that we did not start from seed ourselves. This is disappointing, but it really isn’t the end of the world.
Additionally, our asparagus never came back this spring. Upon inspection, it looks as though we probably didn’t water enough throughout the winter which most likely killed all our crowns. Ugh. Trying to make lemonade out of lemons, we have decided to plant out the whole bed with basil. If it all survives, we will make and freeze a ton of pesto to get us through the winter! I am hopeful that this will work!

M
