I remember watching my mom crochet when I was tiny. I would watch the yarn slide through her fingers and her hook do a little dance and, in the end, there would be a beautiful blanket where a ball of yarn used to be.
My mom taught me how to crochet when I was still pretty little…maybe six or seven, though I can’t remember for sure. I would sit for hours trying to get my base chains just right so Mom could teach me the next step, how to work the second row.
Crochet became a meditation for me…something I could do anytime, anywhere, just to relax. As I have gotten older and busier, that meditation has fallen away a bit, but I am ready to begin practicing regularly again…
I recently spent a full day organizing all of my yarn and consolidating it down into two containers. Some of it was yarn I had purchased or been given, and some of it came from my mom when she passed. I untangled and de-knotted and and snipped what couldn’t be saved and I marveled at how much potential lies in every single ball of colorful, textured yarn.
Mixed in with the yarn I also found many, many hooks and am so happy to know what I have and am very inspired to create many new items where simple balls used to be.
In with some of my moms yarn, I also found a few small unfinished projects. I don’t know when she started them or who they were intended for, but I intend to finish them in her stead, adding some of me to her beginnings and and some of her to my endings.
