Harvest

Harvest Monday

Happy Monday everyone!!!

I didn’t take many pictures this week (I was too busy taking pictures of our guests and the shenanigans that occurred with said guests 😉 ).  Luckily, the lack of pictures is not representative of what’s actually coming in from the garden!

While the tomato tally is lower this week than the past several, we are again harvesting Cherokee Purples and Italian Heirlooms (in addition the the Romas, Yellow Taxis and Cherries that have been trickling in in a continuous stream) and are anxiously anticipating the arrival of our Barnes Mountain Yellows and Orange Flesh Purple Smudges.

Cherry tomatoes and a single Happy Yummy Pepper

Lemon cukes, tomatoes and eggs
The big winner this week were our Lemon Cucumbers!  I have a huge bag of them in the fridge just waiting to be turned into pickles and relish!  Any day now.  Really.  I’d love to hear about favorite relish recipes if anyone would like to share!!!

The temperatures over the next week are supposed to be rising only into the 70s throughout the day and down into the 40s/low 50s at night…While this makes for nice tea weather (and cozy/comfy clothing choices), I am wondering how much longer our garden will produce as wonderfully as it has been this summer.  Fall is definitely descending.

This weeks totals:
  • Apples = 5 lb
  • Cucumbers
    • Lemon = 6 lb 5 oz
    • Mystery = 1 lb 15 oz
  • Mint = 4 oz
  • Mixed Greens = 8 oz
  • Peppers
    • Bell = 10 oz
    • Happy Yummy = 1 oz
    • Mystery = 13 oz
    • Shishito = 2 oz
  • Pole Beans = 12 oz
  • Summer Squash = 5 oz
  • Swiss Chard = 5 oz
  • Tomatillos = 9 oz
  • Tomatoes = 4 lb 14 oz
  • Zucchini = 2 lb 9 oz
  • Eggs = 65

Hope everyone has a wonderful day!
Happy harvesting!

  1. Not sure if you like curry or not but got this recipe many years ago from an old farmers wife. It is an excellent relish on hotdogs.

    1 qt cucumbers
    1 qt onions
    1 qt cabbage
    1 qt green tomatoes
    1 bunch celery
    3 green peppers
    2 red peppers

put through the food chopper, sprinkle with 1/2 cup salt, let stand 1-2 hours Drain

    6 cups sugar
    5 cups vinegar
    1 tablespoon tumeric
    1 tablespoon mustard seed
    1 tablespoon curry powder
3/4 cup flour wet with some of the vinegar.
boil together for 10 minutes can hot.

    1. Thanks for the link, Barbara! I’ll check it out!

The lemon cukes taste pretty much like regular cukes but their skin is a bit crisper! I absolutely love them!

  2. Those lemon cucumbers are lovely. I haven’t made relish in ages. I usually make pickles with cukes, when I have them. And that is what the Happy Yummys are supposed to look like! Hopefully yours will ripen up soon.

    1. Yay! I’m glad they’re doing what they’re supposed to 🙂 There are a ton on the plant, so hopefully the weather holds off long enough for them to do their thing!

  3. Nice harvest! So you have some happy yummy’s too? Is yours sweet? I have had years like that with the lemon cukes and other years where they barely produced. They are neat aren’t they!

    1. The Happy Yummy’s are sweet, but with a good kick to them, too! I’m always a bit surprised by it!

  4. That has been our weather all “summer” long. It’s supposed to get a bit warmer around here for the fall but it doesn’t feel like it’s going to happen this year. Oh well, at least the tomatoes and peppers are starting to ripen…

That Happy Yummy pepper sure is pretty.

    1. Oh man…I would not be happy with a chill in the air all summer! I’m glad your peppers and tomatoes are doing OK, though!!!

  5. What a beautiful pepper! My dad planted the Cherokee Purples this year and they raved about them.

    1. We’ve been very happy with our Cherokee Purples! I think I’ll always find a spot in the garden for them 🙂

  6. I have never heard of those two tomatoes. My curiosity is piqued. I’m going to have to take a look!

    1. Ooohh…I can’t wait to see if you decide to try either of them! I love experimenting with tomato varieties!

  7. The Cherokee purples are just delicious. Those lemon cukes are so cute. We are having cooler nights also as long as there is no frost we should be OK for a while, I hope.

    1. Yeah…that’s what I’m thinking! I can handle it staying a bit cool, but I’ll be happy to do without any frost for a couple mroe months! We’ll see…

  8. sounds like a good harvest week for you too. We’ve had a bit of very welcome and much needed rain, I’ve turned off the cooler, perhaps for the last time and am enjoying the weather!

    1. It has definitely been nice to have some cooler weather and a little moisture! Glad you’re enjoying it, too!

  9. Those lemon cukes look wonderful! The only relish recipe I make is the sweet pickle relish in the Ball Blue Book. It is very tasty but I usually have a lot of the liquid left over because the recipe makes too much of it.
