Strawberry Pot

I’ve read mixed reviews about strawberry pots, but we were given one last year that has since sat empty and figured it was time to give it a try.  So, we purchased some Allstars to give them a shot since we already have a small Quinault patch in our front yard.

We started by cutting a small piece of weed cloth into a circle to fit in the bottom of our pot.  We then began filling the pot to the first row of pockets with some organic potting soil.

Then, we measured the distance from the top of the soil to the top of our pot (our distance was about 14 inches) and cut a piece of plastic pipe to size.

Next, Tool Lady drilled several holes in the pipe.  These holes will allow our strawberries to be thoroughly watered from the inside out.

After we drilled all the holes we placed our pipe back into the pot and begin filling it with soil.  We taped off the top of the pipe so as not to fill it with soil, too.

Once our pot was full, we started planting our strawberries in their little pockets (Tool Lady intentionally picked the strawberries that had a couple of starts in each pot in order to get more bang for our buck).  Once we finished planting we rinsed off the pot, took off the tape and filled the well (the pipe) with water which then slowly seeped into the soil.

Now all we have to do is wait as patiently as possible for our strawberries to grow 😉  We put the pot in the front yard where it will get some sun, but not too much sun as pots tend to dry out and bake quite quickly here.

  1. I hope you get a lot of strawberries. My strawberry pot did well the first year, not so much the second year. I fertilized it this spring, and it is going gangbusters again. BTW, I mentioned you and Tool Girl in my post today about my building a new raised garden bed by myself. You two inspired me.
