Happy Friday, everyone!!!
I’ve continued to hope that the warm weather will stick around and have been slowly transplanting hardened off veggies into either the ground or their permanent pots. I have to continuously fight the urge to put everything in the ground right now, but we are very close! Anyhow, here’s a peek at some of what we’ve been up to this week…
Plant something:
- Direct sow = summer squash (patti-pan, crook-neck, zucchini), winter squash (butternut), carrots (danvers, dragon, parisienne, carnival), beets (early wonder)
- Transplant = eggplant (two purple, 3 black beauty), tomatoes (one of each-brandywine, cherokee purple, roma), tomatillos, jalapenos
Harvest something (from this Harvest Monday post):
- Beets = 6 lbs
- Carrots = 2 lbs
- Eggs = 32
Preserve something: Just some more beans…7 quarts of pintos.
Waste not: Nothing this week beyond the weekly composting, saving of eggshells and kitchen scraps to the chickens.
Want Not: Zip.
Eat the Food: Some greens and carrots, beans and home made tortillas. Not much else that was good for us though, as we’ve eaten out a lot this week. Ah well…sometimes even the best intentions fall away.
I have noticed that there are still a lot of cans in the pantry that need to be eaten up before canning season knocks me on my ass. So, this is a necessity! How the heck am I supposed to make new jam when we still have some from last year??? Yeah…
Build community food systems: We sold a dozen eggs to some friends 🙂
Skill up: We had our first casualty in the pressure canner this week. The bottom fell out of one of our jars while it was processing. Luckily it didn’t affect any of the other jars and we only lost a quart of beans 🙂 There must have been a crack in it that we didn’t see.
Awesome, as usual!! Carrots look yummy, what varieties are those? I see some pinkish/red colors, love it. Heirlooms I assume? Sorry about the jar but better to find out then then when carrying them to the pantry, ha.

Yes! So much better to discover the break in the canner and not on the floor! Crazy canning! 😉
Isn’t that freaky? I’ve had the bottoms come off jars before. It’s so weird-it’s such a clean break.
Totally freaky! I’m glad it was clean and I’m glad they were trapped in the canner 🙂 I have nightmares about the top blowing off…lol. So far, nothings been that dramatic, though 😉
I’m so freaked out about the pressure canner. GRRR! The beans didn’t burn did they? 😉
I’m skipping today’s Independence Days Challenge because I’m having a hard time typing. Something’s wrong with my two index fingers.
Nope, no burning! Because there’s several inches of water in the bottom once you add in the jars, all they did was swim around in it…thank goodness! I was just glad the break was clean and didn’t cause any damage to the other jars!
