New Counter Tops

I just realized that, a few months ago we put in new counter tops in our kitchen and I never posted about it!!!  I’m sure you’ve seen glimpses of them in my posts, but here’s the official lowdown…

Five years ago when we moved into our house, one of the first things we added to our To-Do list was to re-do the counter tops.  They were this awful laminate stainless steel that was warped in places and chipped all over the place.  They looked good from afar, but up close they were really ugly.

Well, fast forward several years and they were still in place.  Always an eyesore, but also a huge expense that we weren’t sure when we would find the money to accomplish a total overhaul.  Then, at Christmas, both Tool Lady and I were given a little cash as a gift that we stashed away.  Shortly thereafter, Tool Lady (the Craigslist Queen) found these awesome butcher block counter tops on craigslist.  So, we checked them out, compared the cost to new counter tops and decided we were getting them at about 50% off, which just so happened to be exactly the amount of cash we were given.  I guess the Universe lined up for us to get new counter tops, ha?

So, we purchased the counters from a nice woman who had just had hers re-done and called up my dad to see if he could help us with measurements and re-finishing.  Of course he said yes 🙂

Long story short, my dad is amazing.  He took them to his shop and spliced them together so they’d fit our space perfectly…we helped with the sanding and staining and the removal of the two pieces of original counter tops on either side of our stove…then, he and one of his workers brought them over, pulled out the large piece of original counter and installed the ones…all within about a month of our purchase.  Magic.

While tearing apart the counters, we found this bad boy drawn on the bottom of one of them.  El Cock just might have to become our new Homestead  Mascot.  Pretty hilarious considering that I’m sure whoever drew this would’ve never guessed we’d have a bunch of chickens in our backyard 🙂  Good stuff.

To top it all off, we also painted!  Yes!  We thought that all of the light wood with our white walls would be just a bit to…bright!  So, we all voted and decided on green.  I wouldn’t say it’s the best color, but it’s growing on us and no one wants to paint again for right now, so it works 😉

How is it that EVERYTHING gets trashed when you’re painting?!?
Yeah…forgive the mess, but you get the picture 🙂
All in all, we’ve been happy with our new counter tops.  It’s definitely been a learning curve to figure out how to take care of them, but I love the way they look and feel and am so happy that they’re new 🙂

  1. Looks great – good job, and good find! I’ve been on a remodeling rampage since last summer and just finished my first major paint job in one area of our place last night. I plan on finally being able to put it all back together this evening, so all the displaced stuff can get back in its proper place and out of everyone’s way! The kitchen is my next target after the bathroom, and yes, Craigslist and Google are great remodeling partners 🙂 It’s funny, we had that very same “hmmm…this isn’t quite what we envisaged” reaction after the paint went on, but it’s growing on us too.

I’ve been documenting my attempts at transforming our space here: http://fiddlerchick.wordpress.com/category/ghetto-home-improvement-projects/
