Independence Days

Happy Friday everyone!

This week has been super long and super exhausting.  I manage an after school and summer camp for girls and this week we held our annual Spring Break Camp.  While it’s been full of lots of fun and a ton of learning (we focus on hands on, experiential science activities throughout the week), I am completely wiped out.

The roses think it’s time to start peeking…

Looking back at my accomplishments around our little urban farm this week, they don’t sound too incredibly exciting, but I’m amazed that I actually got a few things done.  I don’t have a ton of homework do this weekend (thank goodness), so (weather permitting), I think I will spend some serious time outside, playing in the dirt, reading, planning and helping prep for our bee relocation.  It’s only March and we should really have a good two months left of potential freezes, but I think the sunshine, fresh air and promise of the official arrival of Spring (4 days!!!) will do me some good.

Alright, onto the details…

Plant something (in soil pods under the grow lights)

  • Bunching onions
  • Lemon Balm
  • German Chamomile
  • Lettuce Leaf Basil
  • Oregano Vulgare
  • Thyme
  • Eggplant

I’m determined to have an herb garden this year.  I haven’t had much luck the past couple of years, but this year will be different!  🙂
Harvest something (from this Harvest Monday post):

  • Mixed greens = 3 oz
  • Spinach = 1 oz
  • Kale = 1 oz
  • Eggs = 17

Preserve something: Nothing this week.
Waste not (beyond normal composting):

  • Brought home a bag of shredding from work to throw on the compost pile.  I think this actually happened before this week, but I didn’t mark it down, so I am now 😉

Want Not: Nothing this week.

Eat the Food:

  • 1 quart pinto beans
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • green chile (we eat this every week, I just hadn’t thought to post about it until now)
  • eggs
  • greens harvested from under the grow lights (again, we eat these each week)
  • Tried my hand at a brand new, super yummy muffin recipe last weekend

Build community food systems:

  • We’ve had some interesting conversations over the past week with some fellow small-scale homesteaders and some other friends about how to work together more often, share our skills and teach each other.

Skill up: I’m sure there’s got to be something, but I can’t think of a single thing right now.

  1. Planning to get my hands dirty outside this weekend, too, before it gets cold and yucky again! Good luck moving your bees.

    1. Ha! Yeah…I guess bee training is kind of a skill! Maybe I’ll add it to next weeks list once we see how they do 🙂
