Happy Monday, everyone!!!
Well, this week the weather has been all over the place! Warm and sunny mixed with cold and windy. We even got a couple of dustings of snow. Weird, weird winter.
The warmth and longer days have really affected our hoop houses and everything is looking even better than it did last week! Our spinach is getting huge and made for a nice single harvest on Sunday. While we’re still harvesting some greens and spinach from under the grow lights, I think we’ve officially hit the time of year when the grow lights will be devoted to seedlings and the hoop houses will be devoted to sizing up everything we’ve over-wintered in them (spinach, lettuce, beets, carrots, turnips, radishes, chard and garlic).
While checking on the hoop houses over the weekend, I also threw a couple of new seeds in them. I just couldn’t resist. It might be early still, but I figured it was worth a shot! I planted a row of dwarf sugar snap peas I had left over from last year and a row of golden beets from Mary. We’ll see how it goes 🙂
This weeks totals:
- Mixed Greens = 2 ounces
- Spinach = 2 ounce from under the grow lights
- Spinach = 2 ounces from the hoop house
- Eggs = 19
Were having that same kind of weather week ourselves. Was gorgeous on Saturday, heavy rains on Monday, skiff of snow on Tuesday, supposed to be back to sunshine and warmer temps on Thursday. Oh well, guess that is March for you!
The spinach looks beautiful. I bet your hoop house direct seed sowing will do great if the other plants are waking up as much as you indicate.
Silly weather. I hope the seeds do well, too. I’m super excited about the beets, I’ve never grown that variety before but I love them. Fingers are definitely crossed for some good germination!
It has definitely been a weird winter weather wise! I just hope that we have a good growing season!

Everyone has spinach but me – I think I might grow some this year, i sometimes just rely on my chard to substitute but I do occasionally miss the ‘real’ thing.
I absolutely love spinach. We’ve actually talked about not growing lettuce anymore and just sticking to spinach 😉 I am trying my hand at chard again this year (last year I got nothing, literally). Once we have some experience with chard, i think we’ll decide what’s worth growing and what’s not.
Good luck with the beets! I planted a short row yesterday myself out in the open. What variety of spinach is that? My old fashioned Bloomsdale doesn’t get nearly that big…
Thanks Mary! I’m super excited about them! The spinach in that bed is Bloomsdale. It’s done the best for us so far and does get remarkably big! I wonder what the contributing factors could be in the differences in size? Oh, the science of gardening! I love it!

MMMspinach- all of mine is henpecked- or in this case mocking bird pecked. Time to break out the shot gun…. or maybe a scarecrow or something.
