Well, we have been officially freezing’ our buns for the last month, but the real challenge has popped up over the last several days! With temps falling below zero a few nights in a row (which seems to be turning into a new norm, here…at least after last February’s record breaking lows and this months lows reaching well below zero) we’ll see what the next few month bring.
For the most part, we’ve done pretty well with maintaining our temps at their pre-set levels (52 through the night and while we’re gone during the day, 65 while we’re home and moving around). We’re wearing more layers, adding blankets onto the beds and drinking lots of hot beverages. Even so, 52 degrees feels pretty damn cold when I roll out of my super cozy, ultra warm bed each morning to work on homework!!!
In the interest of full honesty, there have been a few evenings that the thermostat has been tampered with temporarily, usually by Tool Lady, who tells me continually that she’s freezing. I guess that’s why it’s called a challenge, right? (As I type these words, though, I must confess, my hands ARE a bit cold!)
I keep trying to remind myself how lucky we are to actually have heat! No matter how low it is, it’s still there and it’s still working! YAY!!! This is just a challenge, no one’s getting hurt, and maybe, just maybe, we’ll save a bit of money and learn a few things through this process. Hey, at least we don’t wake up each morning with frost on the blankets like they did in the old days, right?

Thor and I live in the Mojave Desert so our temps range from 30-ish to 115-ish at the extremes. We have wind about 80% of the time which is so fun : /
That aside, Thor decided about 10 years ago that the heating and air conditioning unit on the house “broke”, and would not be fixed, so we have gone without both for lo those 10 yrs; again, fun! : /
We cook, a LOT, in the winter, and after the first triple digits that first yr we convinced Thor to buy a “swamp cooler”. Other than that we take showers to cool down or heat up, layer, pile on blankets, or wear lots of cotton and linen (and yes, whining helps at times).
I am pretty much a whiner, but have found that in the long run I’d rather spend my money on other things too. Who knew?

Thanks for finding me! Your extreme temps are crazy! I can only imagine!!! I love that you don’t have a heater! I think I could (probably) do that (both for temperature reasons AND monetary reasons), but I don’t think my family could handle it…at all! They’re definitely struggling this winter, even though we are having quite a mild winter!
Hang in there! You’re having some very cold nights there. We’re doing the same thing at our house. We’ve not gone set the thermostat above 64 yet,but our coldest temps have been only down to the mid 20s.
Casey – Isn’t it amazing how spoiled we are with our heaters? I just keep reminding myself that not-so-long-ago they didn’t exist! 😉
We don’t get winters below zero but I certainly start complaining when it’s about 4 degrees celcius here (usually early morning). Our heater is set to 19 degrees, and I use it more than I should, but less than most.
