With the beautiful weather we’ve been having over the past few weeks, our fruit trees are starting to bloom. They are gorgeous and full of hope and life! They are also super sensitive little creatures that can wither and fall right off at a moments notice when the temperature drops just a degree or two below their comfort zone.
Well, while I have accepted the fact that I cannot control the weather or the temperature, I’ll be damned if I don’t try my best to help these little blossoms grow into the magical apples, pears and cherries that they’re destined to be! Apparently, our apricot tree is holding out for the really warm weather, which I am grateful for…no blossoms yet!
So, last weekend (amid our trips to Lowe’s for lumber) we went to four different places (yes, I really did say four) in a hunt for freeze cloth to drape over our little trees in the hope of creating a barrier between the blossoms and the chilly air. Luckily, we finally found some at Santa Fe Greenhouses after being looked at like a freak for asking about it at the other three places.
So, when it falls below freezing, our front yard looks like a Ghost Yard and my fingers remain crossed that, as a thanks for our efforts, our trees will provide us with a real harvest this year!
