Handmade

The first weekend of every August for the past 41 years, the non-profit I work for has hosted an Arts & Crafts Show on the Plaza as a major fundraiser to support the programs we implement with girls ages 5-18.  It is a very busy, extremely exhausting weekend, and it is a lot of fun!

In addition to all the hauling and setting up and tearing down and working and working and working in between, there is people watching, food eating, window shopping and actual shopping to be done.  I try my best to not spend a ton of money each year, but instead allow just a little splurging in the interest of supporting the artists and beautifying our personal space a bit.  Here’s what I came home with this year:

Wall art by Michael Rohner. Michael is a regular vendor in our show (and shows all over the US) and I always try to support him.  His work is truly inspiring and he shares it not only on his website, but via facebook, twitter and instagram.

These beautiful prints will be framed and put up in Sprouts room as we prepare for her or his arrival in October.  Each one symbolizes one of us…The fish is Fish Girl, the bee is me, the turtle is Tool Lady and the owl is Sprout.  Spirit animals, if you will.  I cannot wait to get these framed and up!

The People Mover by North Star Toys.  Another regular vendor, though I have never purchased from them before now.  However, I have always admired their work and love that everything they do is as green as possible (they use food grade mineral oil and non-toxic paint to treat everything). They also have a facebook page where they post occasionally.  Of course, this is another gift for Sprout, and yes, we are definitely nesting!

Wall art by The Lost Highway Sign Company.  This little sign was generously gifted to me at the end of the show because Levi (the artist) didn’t think he could sell it elsewhere.  I, personally, couldn’t be happier to have it!  Check out his site, it is full of pretty much every word, inspiration and silliness you can imagine and, of course, it’s all recycled!

Now, after working all weekend, I get to go in a little late to work today before taking off tomorrow to get Fish Girl to Orientation at UNM (holy moly, I have a child in college!!!) and running some errands in Albuquerque.  But first, first we will go purchase a few frames and visit the midwife before heading to work today.
I hope that, whatever you’re doing today, you have a wonderful day!!!
xoxo,
M

Hello again, I’ve been so absent. I’m finally back into blogging after a break after our donor had to return home to the Caribbean. I’ve been nominated for a number of Liebster Awards, so it’s given me the shove to start blogging! I just came on here to find your address to nominate you and then see your news about Sprout! My blog reader was having difficulties, then died when Google Reader stopped, so all my blogs that aren’t wordpress ones weren’t being read.
So wow – brilliant news!!! I am so happy for you and Tool Lady and Fish Girl. Two years of trying is hard, real hard. I empathise with you. xx
So you are nominated for (another?) Liebster, I’m writing the post now (look for the post Liebster Award – Rua), so the questions will be up once I have thought of them (and gone and collected the firewood and fed our new puppy…)
