Alright, we have a mystery and I’m hoping you can help me with it!
When we first moved into our home six years ago, we planted two rose bushes under one of our ground level windows. They were small but grew well over the next few years. They didn’t, however, give us the amazing blooms we had hoped for (or the thorns/security we wanted secondarily). The tiny, simple roses bloomed quickly, over about a weeks time, then disappeared for the rest of the year.

Then, last year, the rain barrel that sits in the rose bed (on a couple of cement blocks), lost it’s balance and fell onto the rose closest to it. The rose was crushed down to the ground and completely broken off it’s base and we were sure it was gone forever. We cleaned it up and figured we would simply replace it and be done with it. We didn’t, however, dig out it’s root ball.
Earlier this spring it started growing back, though not from it’s original planting spot (it’s about a foot away from the original bush) and it looks like this…

Not only is it a beautiful fuchsia, rosie color, but it also has thorns! Yep, not only did the color change, so did the petals and the leaves and it now has thorns! It is a completely different rose!
So, my question is, how the heck could this happen? Might it have been a spliced rose of some sort that literally went back to it’s roots when it was broken down to it’s roots? Have any of you experienced anything like this before? Please share your thoughts and stories in the comments…let’s learn from each other! Thanks in advance for your wisdom!

Yep, I was going to say grafted, too. Most roses are. I like your new one. It’s purty!

Thanks, Sandy! That’s what we thought, but since we have never purchased or cared for roses before now, it’s all new to us! Nature is an amazing thing, isn’t it?
