Winter Tomatoes

While grocery shopping last weekend I decided to treat myself to the latest Mother Earth News Wiser Living series.  Inside, I found an article about growing tomatoes throughout the winter and knew that I would just have to try it!

Last year I had hoped to still have tomatoes for Thanksgiving, but that didn’t happen as they all ripened up way before late November.  Maybe this is the magic trick?

Right now in the garden I have two indeterminate cherry tomato varieties that I just adore…a bi-color cherry and a small sweet red cherry.  I am going to try both.

The only problem is that we do not have a south facing window.  We do, however, have a west/southwest facing sliding glass door where I will place one of the tomatoes (once rooted, transplanted and brought indoors).  I will place the second tomato on the bottom shelf of our grow light stand in the hope that it will get enough light from the 3 lights and will climb up the side of the stand (with help, of course).

This is all an experiment, so we’ll just wait and see what happens.  It can’t hurt to try, right?  And we just might be able to enjoy a little taste of summer throughout the cold months!  🙂
