Harvest Monday

Happy Monday everyone!

I couldn’t wait to announce our very first strawberries as they were harvested last week so I posted about them on Wednesday!  They were absolutely divine!!!  There haven’t been many of them, but the few we have eaten have been so sweet and juicy and well worth the wait!

This is the first year we’ve had chamomile growing growing successfully and I’ve gotten in the habit of harvesting a few flowers each day as they open and yellow up.  While they don’t weigh much, I am hopeful that we’ll get a couple of jars full by the end of the season for winter tea.

We’ve also gotten our first few peas, a small handful of overwintered carrots (Parisienne) and a bunch of overwintered kale.  I have to say, I’m very excited to begin seeing a bit more color coming out of the garden 🙂

This weeks totals:
  • Carrots = 3 oz
  • Kale = 5 oz
  • Peas = 2 oz
  • Strawberries = 5 oz
  • Eggs = 24 eggs
Hope everyone has a fabulous day!
Happy harvesting!

Thanks! You will love having it grow in your yard! It smells divine and attracts tons of ladybugs!!!

Chamomile tea……….lovely and congrats on your first strawberries!!

I so love chamomile. And it is so easy to grow, but a real PITA to pick. I’ve got to get out and pick mine soon, but it just keeps raining.

Oh man…we’ll totally take some of your rain!!! I love picking the little chamomile heads…it’s kind of like a meditation. But then again, I only have a tiny patch…I might not be so happy about it if we had tons growing 😉

Hooray for your berries! We harvested some too but the little man gobbled them all up before we even moved from the patch!

Ha! Isn’t that always the way with little ones and sweet garden treats! Congrats on harvesting them in the first place 🙂

Congrats on your first strawberries and the chamomile flowers look so cheery. I’m growing chamomile for the first time, but no flowers yet.

    1. Bee Girl

Thanks Julie! Germination seems a bit tricky with Chamomile, so congrats on getting this far…the flowers should follow shortly!

Is chamomile perennial or annual? I’ve got little plants growing that I started from seeds indoors, but they aren’t budding yet. I’m just confused because It seemed like your growing season has been coming in “behind” mine. . .

I believe it is an annual but it likes to self seed. We planted chamomile in our bed last year but it did nothing…until it germinated and came up on its own this spring! I didn’t even think about it and sowed some under our grow lights as an experiment since I thought last years failed. So now I have some in the bed and some in a pot. Not really sure what the deal was, but I’ll take it 😉

We’re probably behind you (we’re behind everyone, it seems) because of our elevation. We have cool nights and a fairly short growing season. We also get very little rain here, being in the “high desert”. Ah…the joys of growing at 7000 feet!

Yummy strawberries. I have having the hardest time trying to get my chamomile to sprout. I love tea, so I will keep trying….haven’t seen a plant anywhere.

Our chamomile didn’t do anything last year at all, but then sprouted up beautifully this year…from last years seeds still waiting in the ground! Very interesting, but very wonderful, too 🙂

We just picked our first strawberries last week so sweet and it looks we could be getting a few more once they turn red. Sweet treats worth the wait.

    1. Bee Girl

Congrats on your strawberries! They’re definitely worth the wait…even for just a few at a time 😉

Congrats on the strawberries! I remember I grew Parisienne carrots 3 or 4 years ago but didn’t realize they were round rather than long. In retrospect, my crop was just fine while I thought at the time that I had grown crappy carrots 🙂

    1. Bee Girl

Ha! I love your story about the Parisienne carrots! Our seed was given to us as a gift and I am now in love with them! So sweet and tiny! And they take up almost no space 🙂

Yum! We are waiting on the yellow ones to fatten up….

    1. Bee Girl

Aren’t they simply delicious?! Really, just to have tomatoes early is a gift, but it’s helpful when they’re delicious, too 🙂

Congrats! I’ve not accomplished successful chamomile growing yet. The seeds come up a tiny bit, decide better of it, and die. GAH!

    1. Bee Girl

Thanks, Jocelyn! Your experience has also been ours for the past couple of years! Keep trying!

Chamomile is such a cheery little flower. I totally know what you mean about the excitement of starting to get something other than “green” in the harvest basket. We turned that corner last week and I am thrilled to have a few different and more colorful items to harvest now.

    1. Bee Girl

Yay for color! And yes, I do love the little chamomile flowers! And their scent is nice!

Your harvest consists entirely of things I struggle to grow so I’m hugely impressed. I think I’m too impatient for carrots, too shady for strawberries – although I’m trying again, too many slugs for peas (they keep getting eaten) and I’ve never tried to grow Camomile so congrats on all four.

    1. Bee Girl

Thanks, Liz! I’m pretty excited about our little harvest, too! A little bit of variety goes a long way in my book 🙂
