Harvest Monday

Harvest Monday

Happy Monday everyone!

Slowly but surely we’re pulling out our over-wintered veggies, sowing seeds and transplanting a few tomatoes here and there.  It’s not really time yet, but all the forecasts say our temps will stay above freezing past our average last frost date, so while I’m taking a bit of a risk I really do think it will be OK.  The forecasts are also saying we might even get a few days of rain over the next 10 or so days, which would be absolutely amazing!!!  We haven’t had much moisture at all over the past several months, so I really a hoping it doesn’t blow over 🙂

Do you see the white fuzzies all over the carrots?
Yeah…those are cottonwood seeds and they’re everywhere!
It looks like it’s snowing and they get caught in everything 🙁
Thanks to everyone’s comments last week (thank you everyone!) I learned about leaf miners and how to recognize their eggs.  Our beets were close to becoming completely overrun, so we pulled all but two to enjoy while we can and gave the affected leaves to the chickens.  The two beets I left in the bed are going to seed and I’m just keeping an eye on their leaves and crushing eggs when I find them.  Gross, but necessary.  I found some new leaf miner eggs on our remaining chard last night but did’t get a picture.  I’ll take a few and post them shortly so you can all see what their eggs look like and a the damage they cause.  No fun, but I’m glad I know what they are now.

This weeks totals:

  • Beets = 6 lbs
  • Carrots = 2 lbs
  • Eggs = 32 eggs
Happy harvesting!

Nice harvest! I have a question on growing beets….we have some planted but this is a first for us. How do we know when they are ready to be pulled?

Thanks, Allison! I usually just wait until the top of the bulb looks big enough. It will start to raise up out of the ground a bit and you’ll be able to get an idea of its circumference.

Always good when you can solve a problem in the garden, hoping you get that rain your tomatoes will love it. Carrots and beets great salad combination.

love your carrots and beets. Our forecast is only 10-20% chance of rain tomorrow which means I’ll probably get zip. It’s been months since we had a decent rain and things are really drying up around here. I’m afraid May’s water bill will look like what July’s usually does.

Yeah…I’m a little nervous about the next water bill, too. Still no rain here 🙁 Maybe it’s time to do a dance or say or prayer or something…

Nice bunch of carrots there, I’m growing some Parisienne as well.

Thanks, Mac! This is my first time growing the parisiennes and I’ve been very happy with them 🙂

Glad you figured out what was getting your beets. It looks like you still got a big beet harvest.

Thanks Julie! The problem with creating a space that is alive with growth and beauty means it also comes alive with nasty critters, too :-/ Oh well…such is life… 🙂

I would love to see the pictures of the leaf miner eggs, when you get a chance. I am having a leaf miner problem on my nasturtiums, and I don’t know how to recognize the eggs.

I am glad you got it figured out.

Glad you figured out the leaf miner issue. They can be a real pain. Good harvest this week!

Nice roots you have there. Great variety of carrots which ones do you think taste the best?

Hmmm…I really do like them all! If I had to choose though, I’d say the dragon carrots are my favorite, then the round Parisienne, then the yellow. All the beautiful colors (except for the Parisienne) came in a Carnival Mix pack 🙂
