Seed Chaos

Oy…I opened up my seed bin the other day and found this…

Gross.  How the heck am I supposed to find anything in there!?  It’s all inventoried…I know what I have…I just can’t find it when it’s time to do something with it…like plant it!

So, I sat myself down and spent a little time getting my seeds organized.  I also took the opportunity to do a little sketching while creating dividers.  Nothing fancy, just a little fun and a splash of color 🙂

Much better!  Now, as the weather warms and the soil calls my name, I’ll actually be able to do something about it!

How do you keep your seeds organized?  I’d love to hear about your tricks and organizational tools!

WOW!! What a timely post!! I finally just planted my summer squash, Japanese cucumbers, baby corn, filet beans and a few flowers in the barrels out back, and had an annoying time trying to find the seeds I wanted since most of my collection has been spread all over my workbench in the basement since I did the cool season planting in January (way late!)….

When I began my garden a few years ago, I kept my seed packets in plastic pocket files kept in a big binder, which my seed collection quickly outgrew, so I next tried a few little plastic four-drawer thingies, but they are too small, which led to a very frustrating experience of not only not being able to see what’s in each drawer (I didn’t get around to labeling the little drawers), but the seed packets getting all bent and messed up when I try to open the drawers.

I’ve been organizing my seeds according to season and type, i.e., brassicas, lettuces, peas, cool-season herbs/flowers, etc. I am going to switch to your system of putting them in a bin with dividers. Looks far easier to manage! Thanks for the idea 🙂

Yeah…there are always new ways to organize! I feel like I’ll probably out grow this method in the next couple of years, but it’s working great for now! It was fun to organize it all, too! The process was nice 🙂

So weird I just did the exact same thing, with the envelopes for herbs and other groups too! its so nice to have your seed box looking organised, very inspiring 🙂

Hmmm – mine generally look like the first picture, but just lately I’ve been asking folk to keep their old jars that they buy spices and seasoning in from the grocery store. These make really good seed storage and the shaker tops are great for very fine seed. Now all I need is some neat shelf system to store the little jars on : )

I’ve thought about old spice jars, I just don’t have a space to keep them all at this point. I have visions of one day having a wall of seeds…kind of like a pantry, but better 😉

HaHa. My seeds look like your first picture. To find anything, I have to dig through all of them. I should follow these comments to see if I can get any ideas.

I love your fun sketches. Happy gardening.

I’ve got my seeds divided into three separate containers. I’ve got one for seeds of things I start early- peppers, tomatoes, some herbs, etc. Then I’ve got one for main season direct sow things like beans, peas, corn and other herbs and flowers. The last container is my “early” direct sow seeds like radishes, spinach and chard. This way I can open my seed bins by WHEN I need them- that kind of organization works for me anyway.
BTW- I like your divider idea- I probably could do that to sort my tomatoes and peppers.

Oh-that’s brilliant, Judy! That’s kind of how my brain works best! I just might have to try that out next time I get the Organization Bug 🙂
