Seed Saving

If you read this blog, you probably know that I absolutely love seeds and you also know that I probably spend way too much money on seeds.  Tool Lady is always shaking her head at me, telling me that we don’t need so many seeds!  So, this year it’s been one of my goals to save as many seeds as possible from the various veggies we’ve grown this spring and summer.

So far this year I have saved seeds from our jalapenos, lemon cucumbers, five varieties of tomatoes (brandywines, yelllow taxis, romas, yellow pear cherries and bi-color cherries), mixed lettuce, snap peas, a trio of bush beans and some of the garlic heads we harvested this summer for replanting this fall.  I have chosen to save seeds form the veggies that have done the best in our yard and the veggies that taste the best.

I have also saved seeds from veggies we’ve gotten from our CSA.  We have red bell pepper seeds as well as seeds from two mystery melons and one mystery tomato (maybe purple cherokee???).  I’ve chosen to save these in order to diversify our crops a bit next year and because they obviously (hopefully) have grown well in our climate since all the fruits and veggies from our CSA are sources fairly locally.

I still have seeds to save from a few other tomatoes and all of our winter squash.  Eventually, I’d like to grow the majority (if not all) of our veggies from saved or traded seeds.
Of course, I’m also saving flower seeds (cosmos, marigolds, sunflowers and morning glories), but since our yard really doesn’t have many flowers in it yet, this has been a super slow process.
Are you saving any of your seeds for future seasons???

Thanks Jody! It can definitely be a process, but I am enjoying it on this small scale! Tool Lady got me the cute little envelopes from a craft store and they work perfectly!

We’ve not taken the seed saving step yet. It’s so tedious and we’re not so good at tedious. But your post is definitely pushing us in that direction. I love the packages, they are so well organized.
