My attempt at growing spinach through the summer has been foiled by all the crazy hot weather we’ve been experiencing. I thought that because there is a spot in the front yard that never gets any direct sun, I just might be able to grow lettuces and spinach all summer. Also, it worked last year perfectly!
Well, the arugula and lettuce I planted in April bolted almost immediately after germinating (as you can see, I left some in so I can eventually collect seeds…almost there).
Then, I put in some spinach on June 12. It did really well, with only a couple of plants bolting early, until last weekend. Literally, from one day to the next, every single plant went from happy, to bolted. Oh well.
So, I pulled it all except for two plants, who will wait along with the leftover lettuce. Hopefully I’ll get some seeds out of it all.
I harvested a total of 11 ounces of spinach from this experiment and while I’m sad that it didn’t workout as hoped, I’m glad the chickens got a nice snack out it all!
