Hilling Up Corn

Apparently, hilling up your corn will strengthen it against the wind, allowing it to grow more roots than it would otherwise.  To date, our corn has done just fine without messing with it.  But then again, we have never grown blue corn before.

Our blue corn (which is in the front yard) has gotten really, really tall.  One in particular has surpassed the massive sunflowers growing behind it and is about 8 feet tall right now!  Maybe that’s why one of them is doing this…

Have you ever seen a corn’s toes before?!?  I haven’t, until now!!!  Weird.  Wait!!!  Those must be the roots!!!

I guess that’s why they say to hill it up!!!  Interesting!  Well, I did.  Just that one, though.  We’ll see what the others do, but it’s kind of a jungle in there, so I’ll wait to do it until I have to.

Knowing this though, if we continue to grow corn in the future, I’ll probably hill up my corn before it turns into a jungle 😉

My corns have always had “toes” every year. Some did topple over when they got really tall. I didn’t know hilling them up would prevent that. Thanks!

THat is good to know because we had some issues with our corn and the wind!

It’s things like this that really make me feel like SUCH a newbie!!! Live and learn though, right?!

I made the mistake of not hilling up my corn and boy, did I suffer for it. Eventually I had to build a support system for them after they toppled over. I will be hilling from now on!
