2016 Seed Inventory

I think I may have mentioned before that my oldest daughter works for a nursery and so has phenomenal access to many, many “damaged out” seeds at the end of each season (which really only means that they’re a tiny bit old-like, last season, and the company doesn’t want the nursery to sell them anymore).  So there are a few days a year when she shows up with a big bag full of seeds and big, happy smile on her face.  It’s the best in so many ways.

Since she knows what we like to grow, she grabs what is available at the time that fits…basil…spinach…beans…corn…

Some days it’s just herbs…

Some days it’s a bit of everything…

Sometimes it’s flowers and a ton of Milkweed.

And so, when we were in the thick of growing season I’d grab the newest bag, quickly go through it, and pull out what we were to plant that day or on the coming weekend.  Then, the bag went into the garage for later organization. You know, like…six months later.

So, despite the freezing cold temps and snow still covering the ground, I spent a good chunk of time last weekend making a 2016 Garden Wish List and going through all of our seeds and organizing them.

Seed Organization and Inventory

My mind boggles a bit at the sheer volume of seeds…

At the potential for so much food…

So much Pollinator Heaven.

And then I think, “What on Earth am I going to do with 26 packets of Basil Seeds and well over 30 packets of Tomato Seeds?!”

(You see where I’m going with this, right?)

So this weekend will be spent making a seed starting and succession sowing plan because now I’m inspired!

I may not be quite ready to fix the greenhouse yet (and yes, it’s still too cold out there and will be for a while), but we have our grow light stand and and I may just have to start pushing some seeds into soil very soon so as to ensure the real potential for June Tomatoes and July sauce.

xoxo,
M
