Almost there…

Almost there…

This Saturday (the day after tomorrow!) we will pack our chickens in boxes, drive 30 minutes north, and introduce them to their new coop.

We will walk through the house and property with our new Landlady, ask questions, and be given the rundown of what’s what.

We will begin the next chapter in this ever growing journey of ours by taking on the care and keeping of an 11 acre mini-farm for the next year of our lives in an effort to really delve into this homesteading life we’ve dreamed and fantasized about and decide if this is really what we want to do for the rest of our lives.

As I’ve mentioned before, it’s all quite overwhelming when I look at the big picture of it…so I’m doing my best to put things in perspective and be realistic about what is truly doable this year and what might be best if put off until we have a year of full on homesteading under our belts.

We’re discussing goats and guard dogs, turkeys and meat birds, honey bees and seeds.  For the first time, we’re talking about whether or not we might want to keep a rooster as a body guard for our laying hens against potential predators.

We’re also talking about the sunsets and quiet, the long walks and intentionally calm days, and the very real potential for catching our own dinner while fishing on the Chama without ever leaving the property.

First, though…first, we have to get from here to there.

We have to finish packing up what remains of our clothes and nick knacks, our plates and silver ware.  We have to pick up the truck, get food for our (amazingly helpful) friends, load it all in, drive it all north, unload it all, and then find a home for every little thing in our new home.

Oh, but we’re almost there, my friends.  I can feel it.

We’re standing right on the edge of our dreams.

xoxo,
M

Hi, I have one acre in Arizona and just starting out on our homesteading. WE have 6 chickens and a modest garden (and a lot of dirt, rocks and cactus!) I’ve been following you for about a year now and just wanted to say I am super excited and jealous of your 11 acres you are about to dive into! Best of luck!

Thank you so much for following along, Robin! I imagine there are lots of rocks, dirt and cactus in AZ, but an acre is a wonderful start (especially compared to the 1/8 acre we started on)! Keep up the good fight 🙂
