Kitty’s Clutch of Twelve

Kitty's Clutch Kitty's clutch

I finally got some good photos of Kitty’s clutch of 12 eggs and wanted to share them with you here!

Such a good, protective mama she is, and all settled into Ricky’s shelter where she’ll wait patiently for her ducklings to grow and hatch.

Because last weekend was so warm, she spent a good amount of time off the clutch, so we’re not exactly sure when our start date is to count off from but we’re thinking her little fluff balls should join us on March 3rd or 4th.

This timeline will give them a bit of time to get their feet under them before we have to help them find a new home on the property so we can move Ricky into his permanent shelter and away from Mama, Lucy, and Ethel while they get through the tail end of their pregnancies and begin to prepare for delivery.

Who knows, maybe Kitty already knows about their impending move and will take care of it all for us?

But first, fluffy butts 😉

I have to say, this hatching experience is already so different than last May’s both in terms of our comfort level and in terms of Ember’s awareness and vague understanding of what’s happening. When all is said and done, though, between Kitty’s clutch and the chicken eggs we’re preparing to incubate, our girl may never eat eggs again.

I guess there are worse things.

xoxo,
M

How exciting! 12 babies! That’s a lot for a mummy to care for 🙂

I was worried after yesterday’s rooster processing that maybe my kids would be vegan…nah, they are all asking when we will eat them 🙄 Perhaps E will be the same?

12 *is a lot! She hatched 13 last year and 12 survived so I think she’ll do just fine 🙂 I hope E will eat eggs again, but has hit a patch of ‘no eggs’…which is probably just her being three and picky but we’ll see 😉
