Akuna – LGD Update

Akuna – LGD Update

Despite all of my angst around this big, white, fluffy, livestock guardian dog (LGD) of ours (between her escapes, her seemingly endless heat cycle, and the necessity for our newly installed electric fencing), I just have to say that…

She is doing so well!

She has calmed around the chickens and the goats and is so very gentle (though sometimes a bit overly enthusiastic) with E!  Not even a year old yet, this LGD of ours has such a sweet disposition and an amazing instinct and I m not sure I have ever been so impressed with a dog as I am with her.

Granted, we still have work to do (she’s a little too curious about the chicks in the brooder in the garage) and training won’t be complete…well…ever, really…but I am grateful for her presence and look forward to continuing to get know her 🙂

I remember catching my Maremma grabbing a chick. I don’t know what he was going to do with it since he didn’t show any signs of eating it. He just grabbed it and held it in his mouth. I told him no and made him put it down. I kept an eye on him but that was the last he did it. He was great with the goats even when the buck tried to mount him and head butted him.

Wow! What a great dog! I’m glad he behaved as trained to! They’re so smart! We do love Akuna, and appreciate her greatly, even when she’s a big fat pain in the rear! 🙂
